KP government bans plastic bags

Report  Web desk : PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has banned the use of non-degradable plastic products including black shopping bags for being a major cause of environmental pollution. This announcement was made by MPA Shaukat Yousafzai who is also Chairman Environment Committee of KP. Director General Environment Protection Agency (EPA), Dr Muhammad Bashir was also present on the occasion. The decision has been taken by Chief Minister KP, Pervez Khattak while chairing a meeting, informs Shaukat while addressing a press conference. Briefing the mediamen about the decision, Shaukat Yousafzai said KP government has decided to give a three months time to shopkeepers and dealers to plastic products to dispose off their all non-degradable material. After passage of the deadline, every shopkeeper or stockiest who was found having stock of non-degradable plastic items especially shopping bags would face a fine starting from Rs 50,000 and extendable to Rs 5,000,000 and two years imprisonment. The ban has been imposed after the KP EPA addresses few objections raised by the law department about the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Prohibition of Non-degradable Plastic Products (Manufacturing, Sale and Usage) Rules 2016. According to Section 7 of KP Prohibition of Non-degradable Plastic Products, no person shall import, manufacture, stockpile, trade, supply, distribute, sell or use any scheduled plastic product which is non-degradable. 02
