More slaughter on way in Palestine, UN agencies prepare for Rafah incursion

Palestine: 5 May 2024: The UN agencies are getting ready for a potential situation where Israeli forces might enter Rafah, a city in the Gaza Strip. They're concerned because such an action could endanger the lives of many Gazans and disrupt the aid efforts that are crucial for the entire region.

Jens Laerke, a spokesperson for the UN humanitarian office, warned that if an incursion happens, it could result in civilian casualties and severely impact humanitarian operations, especially since Rafah plays a significant role in managing aid distribution.

The UN is making plans to ensure aid operations can continue even if an incursion occurs.

Talks to reach an agreement for the release of captives and a ceasefire in Gaza have stepped up, and they will resume in Cairo on Saturday. According to Hamas, its delegation is departing in a "positive spirit" having reviewed the most recent cease-fire agreement."We are determined to secure an agreement in a way that fulfils Palestinians' demands," added the statement.

According to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, "taking the ceasefire should be a no-brainer" for the extremist organization.

The long-running negotiations between Qatar and Egypt, which aimed to temporarily halt Israel's offensive in Gaza in exchange for the release of captives, have resumed with Hamas negotiators back in the Egyptian capital.
