Sukkur administration starts operation to remove encroachment on barrage

Report  Bisma Waseem : Sukkur: District administration as well as irrigation department authorities launched grand operation against illegal occupants of the dykes of off-taking canals of Sukkur Barrage including Dadu, Rice and Khirthar canals during which 12 houses and five shops were demolished through heavy machinery. As result of armed clash between policemen and affected people during which firing and attack with stone pelted took place in which SDO Irrigation, Crane Operator and six protesters were injured. The affected people held protests and sit inns on three places including national highway where burnt tyres and blocked the road as result a woman was fainted while fifteen persons were arrested. After assurance of SSP Sukkur the sit inn was ended. When heavy machinery including crane and tractors started its work of removal of houses and shops constructed between Rice and Khirthar canals and demolished 12 houses and 5 shops, clash took place between anti-encroach team and affected people and police started baton charge in which six persons were injured. Due to pelting with stones from the protesting people, the SDO irrigation department Zahid Mughal as well as crane driver namely Kashmir Pahore were injured and on this occasion to control over the situation, the police also opened aerial fire and police arrested fifteen protesters and shifted them into police mobile vans.Later, the affected people held protests and sit inns at city point bypass, military road and airport road which was led by UC Chairman Baharuddin Brohi, Sher Muhammad Mirani, Mazhar Shah and others where they also burnt tyres as result of which flow of traffic was suspended for several hours and large numbers vehicles were stranded. Due to svere traffic jam, the people faced problems because of sever heat. SSP Sukkur Amjad Shaikh reached the spot who hold talks with protesters and assured them of resolving their problems. He said that matter would be resolved by a committee comprising of five members with include Commissioner Sukkur Muhammad Abbas Baloch, Mayor Sukkur Arsalan Shaikh and the notables of those living on dykes of canal and after such assurance, the protest was ended and protesters dispersed peacefully while those who were arrested by the police were got freed immediately. On the other hand, according to Additional Deputy Commissioner Sukkur Abdul Qadeer Ansari that operation for removal of encroachment from dykes of canals in Sukkur was launched as per orders of Supreme Court which would be continued till removal of all encroachments adding that operation would be launched again with the help of rangers. 02
