Hyderabad: 18 July 2023: The Central Ruet-i-Hilal Committee said on Tuesday that the Muharram moon has not been sighted in the country, hence the first of Muharram will occur on Thursday, July 20. "As you all know, the Islamic calendar begins with Muharram, and today, we have announced the beginning of Muharram," said committee chairman Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad while making the announcement. As a result, the Ashura — Muharram 10 — will take place on July 29 (Saturday).

According to state broadcaster Radio Pakistan, the announcement came following a meeting of the committee in Quetta presided over by Maulana Azad. In the meantime, zonal and district Ruet-i-Hilal Committees met at their respective headquarters.
Muharram is a month of mourning observed mostly by Shia Muslims around the world.

It commemorates the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD, during which many people were martyred, including Prophet Muhammad's (Peace Be Upon Him) grandson, Imam Husain, and other family members were slain or humiliated.

Authorities make appropriate security precautions in light of the increased religious activity during the first ten days of Muharram. This time, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's security plan includes monitoring social media to combat "negative propaganda."
