Assures judges that military trials will not begin without prior notification to the Supreme Court

The federal government told the Supreme Court on Friday that convictions for the May 9 violence would not result in the death penalty, but asked for more time to consider providing a substantive right of appeal against military court verdicts.

"This requires careful consideration in light of the serious implications for having a direct bearing on cases like that of Indian spy Kulbhushan Jadhav or individuals held under the charges of espionage [and] declared enemy of the state," Pakistan's Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan told a bench hearing challenges to military court trials of civilians.
