ISLAMABAD: 26, NOVEMBER, 2020: All educational institutions across Pakistan have been closed from today (Thursday) till January 10, 2021 to prevent the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.
In the wake of the rising number of COVID-19 cases, education ministers on Monday decided to close all educational institutes across the country from November 26 to January 10 as the country is facing the second wave of the epidemic that has claimed nearly 7,800 lives and infected over 3.8 lakh people in the country.
The important decisions regarding the educational institutions were taken in the meeting of the Inter-Provincial Education Ministers Conference (IPEMC) which was presided over by Federal Education Minister Shafqat Mahmood on November 23.
It was decided in the meeting that schools would be shut from Thursday until December 24 on account of increase in COVID-19 cases and from December 26 to January 10, 2021 for winter holidays.
The students will continue their studies online till December 24, followed by winter vacations.
The final decision to reopen schools in January will be based on an evaluation by related authorities, and if the coronavirus epidemic is under control, education activities will be resumed, according to the minister.
The session was attended by the provincial education minister via video link.
The overall situation of COVID-19 cases across the country was reviewed and the latest situation of corona infections in educational institutions was also discussed in the meeting while the ministers have taken a decision regarding the winter vacations in all educational institutions.
After the meeting, Federal Minister for Education Shafqat Mahmood announced closing the educational institutions from November 26 to January 10.
Shafqat Mehmood said "We have decided to keep all educational institutions, including schools, colleges, universities, and tuitions closed. However, online classes will be carried out from November 26 to December 24 after which winter break will start. Schools will reopen on January 11, 2021."
All examinations will be postponed, except for a few specialized exams which will take place, he added.
The National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) had recommended early and extended winter vacations for students due to an increasing number of coronavirus cases at educational institutions during its meeting last week.
During the second wave of the corona pandemic, the cases continue to surface in educational institutions. However, parents have become increasingly concerned about sending their children to school.
It is to be noted that, the COVID-19 infection ratio in schools has surged to over 3 percent from 1 percent previously during the second wave of the coronavirus outbreak in the country.
It is the second time for the country to close schools in order to contain the spread of the deadly virus. Classes were suspended nationwide from March 13 to September 15 during the first wave of the outbreak. (04)
