At least 32 lives lost, over 100 hurt in Egypt train crash

CAIRO: 27, MARCH, 2021: At least 32 people were dead while more than 100 injured when two trains collided in central Egypt, officials said.
According to details, carriages derailed and overturned when two passenger trains collided near the city of Tahta, Sohag province.
Railway authority said that "Emergency brakes were activated on the train in front by "unknown individuals", causing the train behind to crash into it."
One of the trains was travelling between the southern city of Luxor and the Mediterranean port of Alexandria, while the other was travelling between the capital Cairo and the city of Aswan in southern Egypt, sources said.
The Health Ministry said in a statement, dozens of ambulances rushed to the scene in the Tahta district of Sohag province, some 460 kilometres (285 miles) south of the capital Cairo.
"32 people were killed and 66 injured" and transported to hospital".
According to a foreign news agency, at least 32 people were dead and more than 100 were injured in the crash. Video footage seen by AFP showed several carriages overturned.
Egypt has been plagued with deadly train accidents in recent years that have been widely blamed on inadequate infrastructure and poor maintenance. (04)
