WASHINGTON: 13, FEBRUARY, 2021: US President Joe Biden wanted to close the Guantanamo Bay prison before the end of his term, the White House said Friday.
While speaking at a news conference, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said that the Biden administration was working through the National Security Council "to assess the current state of play that the Biden administration has - well, we've inherited from the previous administration."
White House spokeswoman further said that US President Joe Biden wanted to close Guantanamo Bay before the end of his presidency.
Reponding a question about a possible closure of the prison in Cuba during Mr Biden's term, spokeswoman Jen Psaki said at press conference, "That certainly is our goal and our intention."
It is pertinent to mention here that, Former US president Donald Trump expressed willingness in his presidential campaign 2016 to keep the Guantanamo prison open and "fill it with bad guys."
However, some detainees were promised their release from Guantanamo under his Democratic predecessor Mr Obama, but he never succeeded in working out a compromise with Congress. Mr Biden was Mr Obama's vice-president. (04)
