Big food companies deal harshly with livestock

Karachi: 30 December 2020: I'm so glad this is finally coming up. So many people in Pakistan have been saying this locally, including a local religious leader I met whose community used to rely on livestock herding until the big food companies came in "bought" their livestock.
He stated clearly how buffaloes are injected with hormones, their babies kept away from them, brandished with burnt rods, and kept in very very abysmal conditions. His logic was, how can this be halal when we aren't even allowed to sacrifice a sick animal in Islam? This was in Southern Punjab and their primary concern was that "our animals are being mistreated". "Their" animals - with whom they had a relationship of mutual coexistence of love, belonging, food, care, and responsibility.
Animals in modern food industry are in terrible conditions, and kept terribly. The way big food companies have redefined "halal" to justify animal cruelty is literally an insult to Islam there are no ifs and buts about it. We need to do some hardcore soul searching starting with ourselves about whether we even care about what we're putting in our bodies in the name of food.
