Death toll from Indonesia earthquake mounts to 34

JAKARTA: 15, JANUARY, 2021: The death toll from powerful earthquake that stuck Indonesia's Sulawesi island on Friday morning, has mounted to 34.
A 6.2 magnitude earth quake hits Indonesia's Sulawesi island early Friday, claimed many lives, injured hundreds, displaced about 2,000 people while destroyed multiple structures.
According to Indonesia's disaster mitigation agency, powerful quake also caused landslides and forced people to leave their homes in the nighttime darkness.
At least seven people were killed and many buildings including a hotel fell, authorities said.
The epicenter of the quake measuring 6.2 was centered 36 kilometers (22 miles) south of West Sulawesi province’s Mamuju district, at a depth of 18 kilometers (11 miles), the US Geological Survey said while it was six kilometers (3.73 miles) northeast of the city of Majene, at a depth of 10 kilometers."
Three people are dead and 24 are injured," said National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Raditya Jati.
As per initial information by the disaster mitigation agency showed that four people had died and 637 others were injured in Majene, while there were three more fatalities and two dozen injured in the neighbouring area of Mamuju.
Report said that, thousands had fled their homes to seek safety as damaging at least 60 homes. Some buildings were badly damaged, including a public health center, two hotels, the office of the governor of West Sulawesi and a mall, Sudirman Samual, a journalist based in Mamuju, north of the epicentre, told Reuters.
Disaster mitigation agency's spokesperson said, landslides were set off in three locations and blocked a main road connecting Mamuju to the Majene district.
In a video released by the agency, a child trapped under the rubble as people tried to remove debris with their bare hands.
Another video showed that a severed bridge and damaged and even flattened houses. TV stations reported the earthquake damaged part of a hospital and patients were moved to an emergency tent outside.
On more video showed a father cried hopeless, asking help from people to save his children buried under tons of his house rubble. “My children there... they are trapped inside, please help,” he cried in panic. (04)
