ECP plans to take affidavits from candidates to ensure transparent polls

ISLAMABAD: 18, FEBRUARY, 2021: Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Thursday has planned to take affidavits from the candidates to ensure transparency in the Senate polls.
On Wednesday, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) informed the Supreme Court (SC) that it had prepared draft of an affidavit that would be submitted by candidates in elections.
The draft stated that "I undertake and declare on oath that no corrupt practice, illegality or violation of the Constitution or the law has been committed by me in any form in this election. I hereby consent that the ECP may enquire into any accounts and or assets."
On the other hand, the process of scrutiny of nomination papers submitted by the candidates for Senate elections continued today (Thursday).
According to sources, a total of 170 candidates have filed their nomination papers in the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for the Senate elections. It is to be noted that, 29 candidates from Punjab, 39 from Sindh, 51 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), 41 from Balochistan and 10 from the federal capital Islamabad have submitted their details.
National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and other departments have been contacted for assistance while the candidates have also been directed to bring along their party tickets.
The date for filing of appeals against acceptance or rejection of papers is February 20 whereas the appeals will be disposed of by the tribunal on February 23 and the revised list of candidates will be published on February 24. The candidates can withdraw their nomination papers on 25th of this month.
The polling time would be from 0900 hours to 1600 hours on March 3 while places of polling would be Parliament House, Islamabad for Federal Capital, Provincial Assembly building, Lahore for Punjab, provincial assembly building, Karachi for Sindh, provincial assembly building Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Peshawar for KP and provincial assembly building, Quetta for Balochistan.
The ECP established digital facilitation centres at the Election Commission Secretariat and four Provincial Election Commission offices to provide necessary facilities to the returning officers during the scrutiny for the Senate elections 2021 and to improve the system of scrutiny of candidates.
It is pertinent to mention here that a total of 48 senators will be elected this time including twelve each from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Balochistan, eleven each from Punjab and Sindh and two from Islamabad. (04)
