Federal govt approves ordinance to end HEC autonomy

ISLAMABAD: 08, APRIL, 2021: The federal government has planned to end the autonomy of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) and subordinate it to Ministry of Education.
According to sources, the federal cabinet has approved an ordinance on the Higher Education Commission (HEC). The cabinet has approved the ordinance through a summary circulation.
Sources said that all the decisions of HEC will now approved by the Ministry of Education. The ordinance has been renamed as HEC Amendment Ordinance 2021.
According to the ordinance, the chairman of HEC will be appointed for 2 years and the members of HEC will be appointed for 4 years. According to the ordinance, the chairman HEC and members will be able to take another term.
The Higher Education Commission was established in 2002 as an autonomous institution to ensure the promotion of quality education without any political interference. (04)
