Iran reports first case of new coronavirus variant

TEHRAN: 06, JANUARY, 2021: The first case of the highly contagious COVID-19 variant that first emerged in the UK has been detected in Iran, Health Minister Saeed Namaki said on Tuesday.
According to sources, new variant of COVID-19 diagnosed in an Iranian who arrived from the United Kingdom (UK).
The minister told state TVsaid "Unfortunately, we found the first case of the mutated British COVID-19 from a dear compatriot who had returned from England, ... and who was admitted to one of our private hospitals."
"We did not find any trace of this virus in the patient’s relatives," Namaki added.
New coronavirus variant, which is 70 pc more transmissible, has reached 31 countries.
Last month, the World Health Organisation (WHO) tweeted that it was "in close contact with UK officials on the new #COVID19 virus variant" and promised to update governments and the public as more is learned.
"The new strain was identified in southeastern England in September and has been spreading in the area ever since," a WHO official added. (04)
