LAHORE: 20, JANUARY, 2021: National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Wednesday has closed all the inquiries against Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) leaders Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and Chaudhry Pervez Elahi after 20 years.
A two-member bench headed by Justice Sadaqat Ali heard the petition against Chaudhry brothers.
NAB prosecutor has told the Lahore High Court (LHC) that all the inquiries against the Chaudhry brothers have been dismissed.
The court has also disposed Chaudhry brothers pleas for being ineffective.
Earlier, NAB had submitted details of Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and Chaudhry Pervez Elahi assets in LHC. As per NAB details, Punjab Assembly Speaker did not own even Rs 100 in 1985, he joined politics after taking loan of 7.5 lac rupees and now has a net worth Rs 6.5 billion while Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain’s assets are worth 2.5 billion.
Justice Shehram Sarwar said in his remarks that it looked like the inquiry against Chaudhry brothers remained untouched for 17 years.
Chaudhry brothers maintained in their petition, "The NAB is involved in political engineering. It conducted complete investigations 20 years ago but remained unsuccessful. The NAB chairman does not hold the authority to reopen a closed inquiry. We belong to a political family and are being victimized."
Earlier, on December 17, the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Thursday has ordered the anti-graft body to complete the probe against Chaudhry brothers pertaining to assets beyond means within four weeks.
The court heard the case against NAB chairman's powers and DG NAB Shehzad Saleem appeared in the Lahore High Court.
The LHC conducted hearing on Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and Punjab Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi's petition challenging the NAB chairman's authority.
Justice Sadaqat Ali asked what were the allegations against the petitioners.
The lawyer said that there are allegations of assets beyond means and illegal recruitment.
The DG NAB told the court that the case of illegal recruitment against Chaudhry brothers has been closed and the case of assets beyond means is still pending.
He told that the probe against the Chaudhry brothers would take six months to complete. Justice Sadaqat Ali remarked that how the anti-corruption watchdog can start investigation against someone who has already declared their assets.
The LHC then ordered to complete investigation of assets of Chaudhry brothers within four weeks. (04)
