ISLAMABAD: 27, FEBRUARY, 2021: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Saturday has felicitated the nation and saluted Pakistan's armed forces on the second anniversary of the Pakistan Air Force’s (PAF) Operation Swift Retort.
Imran Khan tweeted, "I congratulate the entire nation & salute our Armed Forces on the 2nd Anniversary of our response to India’s illegal, reckless military adventure of air strikes against Pakistan. As a proud & confident nation, we responded with determined resolve at a time & place of our choosing".
"We also demonstrated to the world Pakistan’s responsible behaviour in the face of India’s irresponsible military brinkmanship, by returning the captured Indian pilot. We have always stood for peace & remain ready to move forward to resolve all outstanding issues through dialogue."
"I welcome restoration of the ceasefire along the LOC. The onus of creating an enabling environment for further progress rests with India. India must take necessary steps to meet the long-standing demand & right of the Kashmiri people to self determination acc to UNSC resolutions."
Pakistan is celebrating Surprise Day today (Saturday) to pay tribute to Pakistan Air Force (PAF) for their brave defence of the motherland, downing an Indian jet piloted by Wing Commander Abhinandan Vardaman on February 27, 2019.
The celebration ceremony of Surprise Day will be held here at PAF Headquarters and to be telecasted live across all media channels.
On February 27, 2019, the PAF carried out Operation Swift Retort and shot down two Indian Air Force fighter aircrafts namely MiG-21 and Su-30 where the former’s pilot Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman was caught by Pakistan Army after his safe ejection and falling into the Pakistani side of the line of control (LoC) and dropped bombs within the compounds of Indian military facilities in occupied Kashmir as a warning to the country’s belligerent neighbor.
The Pakistani military had lived up to its promise to ‘surprise’ India in wake of any misadventure, saying that ‘uncalled-for aggression’ from the Indian military ‘would not go unpunished’.
The operation also resulted in the capture of an Indian pilot, Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, after his Mig-21 was shot down. The pilot Abhinandan Varthaman was later handed over to Indian authorities as ‘a goodwill gesture’.
Indian fighter jets had entered into Pakistani territory on February 26 with the intention to bomb a madrassah in Balakot, but had retreated in haste after the PAF scrambled its own jets in response.
The Indian jets had dropped their payload in sovereign Pakistani territory near the old madrassah, but failed to inflict any material damage apart from ruining a few trees.
The PAF giving a resounding response had carried out air strikes at six multiple locations in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) and launched a successful 'surprise' attack, taking down two Indian fighter aircraft in an aerial dogfight whereas it was first ever incident after 1971 when both the rival forces had attacked each others’ territory.
