Polling for PS-52 Umerkot by-elections underway

UMERKOT: 18, JANUARY, 2021: Polling for the PS-52 constituency of Sindh Assembly, in Umerkot District is underway on Monday.
The polling started at 9:00am and will continue till 5:00pm without any break.
In this regard, as much as 128 polling stations and 423 polling booths have been established in the constituency for 153,000 registered voters to exercise their right of vote.
On the other hand, at least 1,400 cops and 400 Rangers personnel have been deployed for the security purposes.
It is to be noted that, total 12 candidates are in the field, while main contest is expected between Syed Ameer Ali Shah of PPP and Arbab Ghulam Rahim of Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA) on PS-52-Umerkot seat which fell vacant due to death of PPP's MPA Ali Mardan Shah.
Earlier, on December 19, ECP had issued schedule for the by-election on the vacant seat of Sindh Assembly constituency PS-52-Umerkot on Friday.
ECP said that polling for the aforesaid seat will be held on January 18 and until then the announcement of all kinds of development projects in the constituency will remain suspended.
Election Commission also barred federal ministers, provincial ministers and assembly members from visiting the constituency in connection with by-polls activities.
According to the instructions of the ECP, the Sindh government cannot appoint or transfer any officer in the constituency till the by-elections.
It is pertinent to mention here that Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had issued schedule for the by-election in the eight constituencies on Friday which had been delayed for past eight months because of the coronavirus pandemic.
After examining facts, the Commission planned to hold by-polls on the vacant seats and ordered the concerned authorities to issue a schedule of by-elections for all the national and provincial assembly vacant seats.
It also asked the provinces to ensure strict observance of health prcautionary measures during the electoral process.
According to sources, the two National Assembly constituencies where by-elections are to be held are: NA-75 Sialkot and NA-45 Kurram Agency.
The provincial assembly vacant seats are: PS-52 Umerkot, PS-88 Malir and PS-43 Sanghar in Sindh, PP-51 Gujranwala in Punjab, PK-63 Nowshera in KP and PB-20 Pishin in Balochistan. (04)
