RESPECT, RANATUNGA

Islamabad: 16 December 2021: This is a true reflection of how dignity and grace is a very Sri Lankan trait. Arjuna Ranatunga, their most inspirational cricket captain — who famously led them to World Cup victory in Lahore in 1996 — retains his respect for an old cricket adversary and friend off the field. And yet, he stands resolutely behind the clarion call for justice following the events of December 3 in Sialkot that devastated the family of Priyantha Diyawadanage and people both in Sri Lanka and Pakistan. The letter goes beyond the grain of being the finest lesson in diplomacy, if you will, but knowing Ranatunga from the days one saw the strapping lad trying to break into the league of big boys in Colombo, it comes straight from the heart. Now, it is incumbent upon Imran Khan, who, to give the devil his due, did make the right noises in the wake of the Sialkot tragedy, to live up to his commitment. Nothing less will do.
