SC orders immediate demolition of Nasla Tower

KARACHI: 24, NOVEMBER, 2021: Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday has expressed anger over the report submitted by the Karachi commissioner and ordered to immediately demolish the Nasla Tower and present report till afternoon.
According to sources, the top court conducted hearing on a reference pertaining to raze Nasla Tower in the port city.
During the hearing, the court has directed to present report regarding Nasla Tower demolition till afternoon and ordered to immediately raze the tower.
On Monday, the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) started the pre-demolition work of the tower on the directives of Karachi Commissioner Muhammad Iqbal Memon. However, soon after the commencement of the demolition work, Ferozabad Assistant Commissioner Asma Batool stopped it on the grounds of safety concerns.
She said "The demolition process has been stopped for a while because of the safety concerns of the passers-by." "Huge blocks fell on the road during the demolition of the building," she added.
She further said that "Without proper safety measures, no demolition could take place because it could cause damage to human lives," adding that "After consulting with the high-ups, the demolition work would resume."
On October 25, 2021, SC had directed to demolish Nasla Tower within a week. During the hearing, the court directed to use latest technology in the process and take all the expenses from the owner of Nasla Tower.
The apex court remarked that "Seize the properties of the owner if he refuses to pay the expenses."
SC remarked that the building should be demolished, as proved by the record that Nasla Tower was built on the occupied land.
The court had also reviewed the documents of all the institutions concerned, directing the commissioner to take immediate custody of Nasla Tower, no concession can be given on illegal constructions. (04)
