Rajhastan: 11 July 2022: The relationship between the Mughals and the Kachwahas was personal as well as political. Raja Man Singh was not only a trusted general of Akbar, his aunt Harkha Bai was also married to the emperor. The marriage was aimed at cementing the political alliance, but also ended up creating cultural ties between the two families – one manifestation of which was this shared architectural style. Harkha Bai was given a very prominent place in the Mughal household, with the title – Mariam-uz-Zamani, i.e. ‘the Mary of her age’. She had considerable personal wealth, including ships that traded with West Asia. Her son, Salim, ascended the Mughal throne as the emperor Jahangir.
