SU s Department of Zoology celebrates International Grasshopper Day

JAMSHORO: 07, SEPTEMBER, 2021: (Report by: Ali Murad Chandio): International Grasshopper Day was celebrated in Zoology Department of the University of Sindh Jamshoro here on Tuesday.

Poster exhibition displaying various species of grasshoppers organized by the students of the department was inaugurated by Vice Chancellor Professor (Meritorious) Dr Muhammad Siddique Kalhoro followed by tree plantation.

After the inauguration of the poster exhibition, Vice Chancellor Dr Kalhoro toured the exhibition and learned about the different species of grasshoppers.

On this occasion, the Vice Chancellor mingled with the students of zoology and asked them about the purpose of the posters and the advantages and disadvantages of grasshoppers.

Talking on the occasion, the Vice Chancellor Dr Kalhoro said that he was happy to see the posters displaying various species of grasshoppers prepared by the students of Zoology Department based on research. He said that the students of the department had a creative mind and were doing their best under the guidance of their teachers.

A the junture, Focal Person on Locust for Sindh nominated by federal government Dr Raffat Sultana briefed the Vice Chancellor on the importance of the International Grasshopper Day and said that there were many species of the insect.

She told that one of the species called "locusts" was extremely dangerous for crops, plants and trees, which she said flown together and could eat up crops within an hour, but ther species called "grasshoppers" were not harmful for crops as they didn't migrate. 

Earlier, the Vice Chancellor planted a sapling in the periphery of the department. Chairperson of the Department of Zoology Dr Naheed Kaka, Dr Nek Muhammad Sheikh, Prof. Sanjhota Bai, Ghulam Nabi Kaka, Dr Riffat Sultana and other teachers and students were present on the occasion who also planted trees.

It may be noted that the International Grasshopper Day is celebrated all over the world on the first Monday in the month of September. (04)
