Islamabad: 12 August 2023: As the deadline for negotiations over the topic approaches, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and departing Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly (NA), Raja Riaz, are anticipated to settle on a candidate for the role of caretaker premier today (Saturday). President Arif Alvi requested in a letter to PM Shehbaz and Raja Riaz on Friday that they put out a candidate for acting prime minister by today.

The interim premier candidate must be announced within three days of the National Assembly's dissolution, according to the Constitution. On August 9, the NA was dissolved. According to the law, if the departing PM and the opposition leader cannot agree on a caretaker premier, they must each submit two names to a committee.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) would have two days to select the caretaker prime minister from the list of names provided to the committee if it is unable to reach a resolution.

PM Shehbaz provided assurance that the title of the head of the temporary set-up would be decided by Saturday while speaking to reporters in Islamabad yesterday. Last night, he also hosted a dinner for the members of the departing government coalition, during which he held more discussions with the opposition leader.

One day after the NA was prematurely dissolved, the first meeting for discussion was conducted at the Prime Minister's House on Friday. They're scheduled to get together once again today for the last round of discussions.
