WASHINGTON: 6-9-2025: A new travel ban ordered by U.S. President Donald Trump goes into effect at 12:01 a.m. ET Monday, barring citizens from 12 countries — including Afghanistan, Iran, Libya, and Somalia — from entering the United States. The administration claims the move is aimed at protecting the country from "foreign terrorists."
Seven additional countries, including Cuba, Venezuela, and Turkmenistan, will face partial entry restrictions.
Trump cited factors such as terrorism concerns, weak identity verification systems, poor criminal record-keeping, and high visa overstay rates as justification for the ban. He also referenced a recent incident in Colorado involving an Egyptian national, though Egypt is not on the list.
The decision triggered outrage abroad and at home. Chad's President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno responded by halting visas for U.S. citizens, calling the U.S. move a blow to national dignity. In Afghanistan, former U.S. allies now fear forced returns and Taliban reprisals.
Critics liken the policy to Trump’s 2017 Muslim-majority country ban. U.S. lawmakers, including Democrat Ro Khanna, slammed the decision as "draconian and unconstitutional," insisting on the right to seek asylum.
