Ottawa: 7 July 2024: India has expressed dissatisfaction to Ottawa regarding recent allegations of interference in Canada’s internal affairs. Indian diplomats in Canada have conveyed this sentiment to senior officials, including National Security and Intelligence Advisor Nathalie G. Drouin, according to a source familiar with the matter.

Several agencies have accused India of foreign interference. In June, the National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians (NSCIP) reported that India has become the second-most significant foreign interference threat to Canada’s democratic institutions and processes, following China and displacing Russia.

The Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) stated in its Public Report 2023 issued in May that major foreign interference perpetrators in Canada and the West include China, Russia, Iran, and India. It highlighted that these countries and their intelligence services engaged in various hostile activities aimed at advancing their interests.

Additionally, the Initial Report from the Public Inquiry into Foreign Interference in Federal Electoral Processes and Democratic Institutions, led by Justice Marie-Josee Hogue, mentioned that India conducts foreign interference activities to align Canada's stance with India's interests, particularly concerning Canada-based supporters of Khalistan.

Responding to these allegations, India’s High Commissioner to Ottawa, Sanjay Kumar Verma, dismissed them as politically motivated. He stated that India rejects claims of interfering in Canadian elections, emphasizing the lack of concrete evidence to substantiate such accusations.

These allegations gained prominence following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's statement in the House of Commons in September last year, citing credible allegations linking Indian agents to the killing of pro-Khalistan figure Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey, British Columbia. Although four Indian nationals were arrested this year in connection with the murder, the Indian involvement has not been confirmed, although investigations in that direction continue.
