Karachi: 11 May 2024: President Asif Ali Zardari was granted immunity from criminal prosecution in two cases before the National Accountability Court (NAB) by an accountability court in Islamabad on Saturday.
Since Zardari was elected president this year, no criminal actions can be brought against him, and those that are already pending have been stayed or postponed, per the court decision, a copy of which can be found on newschannels. In accordance with Section 248(2) of the Constitution, which prohibits the beginning or continuation of criminal proceedings against a sitting president or governor, the president filed a petition with the court last month.
The prosecution agreed with the petition's contents and voiced no objections, saying that it "did not contest the petition."
In an attempt to halt the continuing criminal proceedings against him in the Islamabad Accountability Court for the Thatta Water Supply Project and Park Lane cases, Zardari sought for immunity under Article 248 of the Constitution. Zardari was accused by the NAB prosecution of pressuring the appropriate authorities to approve loans for his front companies, Park Lane, while he was president.
