RAWALPINDI: 06.10.2025: Security sources confirmed on Monday that Lt Gen Muhammad Asim Malik will continue as Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief despite his scheduled retirement this year. Alongside, he remains National Security Advisor, holding both roles simultaneously. Appointed DG ISI in September 2024, his selection was uniquely announced via state-run PTV, rather than traditional government or military channels.

At 59, Malik is recognized as one of Pakistan Army’s top operational commanders. Before ISI, he served three years as Adjutant General at GHQ, overseeing military administration, legal, and disciplinary matters. He has commanded key infantry units in Balochistan and South Waziristan, regions known for security challenges.

A Sword of Honour recipient, Malik also served as chief instructor at the National Defence University and Command and Staff College. Son of retired Lt Gen Ghulam Muhammad Malik, he is a graduate of Fort Leavenworth (US) and the Royal College of Defence Studies (UK), with experience in the Military Operations Directorate.

Retired Lt Gen Naeem Khalid Lodhi praised him as a “quiet yet highly respected officer,” highlighting his work improving welfare and pensions for retired soldiers. His tenure as Adjutant General overlapped with major events, including the arrest of former PM Imran Khan and the May 9 protests. Founded in 1948, the ISI remains Pakistan’s leading intelligence agency.
