Hyderabad: 25 October 2023: The United Nations said on Wednesday that the estimated number of people living in forced displacement from their homes globally had surpassed 114 million, a record amount.
The UN refugee agency, UNHCR, released a statement stating that "the number of people displaced by war, persecution, violence, and human rights violations globally is likely to have exceeded 114 million at the end of September."
According to UNHCR, the conflicts in Ukraine, Sudan, Myanmar, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo were the key factors in the first half of 2023.
Other significant factors included a protracted humanitarian catastrophe in Afghanistan and a mix of drought, floods, and insecurity in Somalia.
"The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is rightfully the center of attention for the world right now. However, far too many wars are spreading or getting worse on a worldwide scale, taking the lives of innocent people and uprooting people,” said UN refugee chief Filippo Grandi.
