X Rejects India's Request to Block 8,000 Accounts, Defends Free Speech

NEW DELHI:  09.05.2025: X (formerly Twitter) has refused India’s order to block over 8,000 accounts, including those of international news outlets and high-profile users, amidst escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. The Indian government threatened fines and jail time for local X employees if the directive was not followed.

X cited concerns over censorship and the lack of specific justifications for the account suspensions. The platform has complied by withholding access to some accounts in India but rejected the broader blocking requests, calling them a violation of free speech.

X emphasized that transparency in government content regulation is essential and urged affected users to seek legal recourse. The company is exploring legal options to challenge the orders but is currently restricted by Indian law in contesting them directly.
